Lagotto Romagnolo – Italy’s Truffle Dog From the Marshlands of Romagna

The Lagotto Romagnolo is an ancient Italian water retriever that reinvented itself as the world’s specialist truffle dog. Originating in the marshlands and lagoons of the Po Delta, especially around Ravenna and Comacchio in the Romagna region, this small-to-medium gundog was once used to retrieve ducks from cold, muddy waters. As wetlands were drained in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, hunters began using the Lagotto’s incredible nose for a new job: locating buried truffles in orchards and woods.

Today, the Lagotto Romagnolo is recognised internationally as a rare but fast-growing companion and working breed. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) lists the Lagotto in Group 8 (Retrievers, Flushing Dogs, Water Dogs), Section 3, Water Dogs, and the Italian kennel club, ENCI, maintains the original standard. The American Kennel Club placed the Lagotto in the Sporting Group when it granted full recognition in 2015, and the Kennel Club in the UK recognises it in the Gundog Group.

Despite its teddy-bear looks, the Lagotto Romagnolo is a serious working dog with a sharp brain, a non-shedding curly coat, and a nose that can map every scent molecule in a field.

  1. i picked up a small stray 1 yr ago. she now weighs 60 lbs. when others ask me her breed i always joke, she must be a cross between a jackal and a dingo. i googled dingo/image and got here. the only thing my dog shares with a dingo would be white paws and white tail tip. i am glad i stumbled upon this blog as i prefer any 4 legged mammal over the 2 legged kind.

  3. They are so cute. Lovely photos. The photos on the side of you blog look like German shepherd pups to me. Are they some of the mixed breeds you speak of?

  4. Very interesting article. I have a dog with a Dingo face and coloring, but since we are in the US that’s probably just a coincidence!
