Rescue dog, Rupee, becomes the first dog at Mount Everest Base Camp!
Rupee’s journey is one of the most remarkable canine survival stories ever recorded. Found barely alive on a remote Himalayan dumpsite, this tiny stray pup was moments from death when traveler and animal welfare advocate Joanne Lefson crossed his path. What followed was a life-changing rescue that transformed Rupee from a starving street dog into an inspiring symbol of hope, resilience, and the extraordinary bond between humans and animals.
When Joanne Lefson, an animal rights crusader and a former professional golfer, rescued Rupee, he had minutes to live. Born and ‘raised’ on a hot, dry dumpsite in an Indian desert, Leh, Northern India, Rupee was on death’s doorstep. At five months of age, Rupee is hardly the picture of health. He is dehydrated and skinny. Rupee’s neighborhood is abundant with strays. There are no shelters here in Leh.

“In Leh, you cannot buy dog food, and resources are incredibly scarce. Many people who have adopted a street dog feed them the basic diet that they themselves eat, chappati, rice, and dal-Laddaki food. His first veterinary visit was in Delhi, where he got his full check-up and all the vaccines needed to fly to Nepal and back to South Africa,” explains Lefson.
Joanne and Rupee began their journey on Expedition Mutt Everest in the Himalayan town of Lukla on October 12, 2013, with the intention of raising awareness about homeless dogs and promoting adoption.
Rupee’s remarkable journey from a dying stray to a symbol of hope shows just how powerful compassion can be. His rescue is more than a single act of kindness — it’s a reminder of the extraordinary resilience of dogs and the life-changing impact humans can have when they choose to help. Stories like Rupee’s inspire greater awareness, empathy, and action for animals in need around the world.
